Playing Ring Fit Adventure Without Legs and Getting Back Into the Nintendo 3DS

Ring FIt Adventure Header.jpg

Today I played Ring Fit Adventure for the first time since I got it near its launch in October 2019 and had recorded a few videos of it for YouTube. I'm not able to play the game standing up yet due to the foot surgery, so I have to hold the left Joy-Con up as if it were on my leg to get the game to let me play. It turns out there are several ways you can play the game using only the Ring-Con, meaning I was able to sit down on the couch and exercise for the first time in a long time. They have a Quickplay option, which has several exercises/minigames that explicitly state Ring-Con only, which was super helpful. They have worldwide leaderboards and even show you when you are about to surpass a random player's score, which gives you enough motivation to get a few extra reps in; I found it to be very effective. Unfortunately my Apple Watch wasn't charged so I didn't time or measure myself, but I played a lot and expect to be pretty sore tomorrow. One of the workouts is meant for your pecs, and you push in and hold the Ring-Con for a moment and then release. As you progress in the stage, you have to push in the Ring-Con even further, which is more difficult. Since I can't really do leg workouts, I found that I could put the Ring-Con in between my legs and work my inner thighs that way. I would switch back and forth between my arms and legs until I just couldn't push in and hold the Ring-Con anymore. Of course, this made my score way higher than it otherwise would be, so I made sure the game didn't save the record or post it to the leaderboards. I do suspect some of the people near the top may be doing that to increase their position, though. I made sure to stretch afterward, and Heather took Day 1 progress pics of me. Ring Fit Adventure is a lot of fun, so I hope I will stick with it and see improvement in my physique over time. I hear once you actually start seeing results, you become a lot more motivated to consistently exercise. I’m going to get that Socrates philosophy body. [There is a reddit thread here discussing whether Socrates actually said that famous quote that gets thrown around.]

Heather and I have been watching a ton of Disney stuff lately, mainly because I haven't seen most of their classics and want to before I jump into the Kingdom Hearts franchise. I started a Letterboxd account if you want to track the fancy version of what I’ve been watching, along with my ratings. We are going to rewatch Toy Story 1-3 to prepare for Toy Story 4, which neither of us has seen yet. I originally wanted to only watch Toy Story 3, but Heather convinced me we should watch all three films due to the character growth that occurs throughout them.

I also played The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time today on my New Nintendo 3DS XL (Majora’s Mask edition!), the first time I've loaded it up for a few weeks now. Heather was reading on her Kindle next to me (the Kindle I gave her after she stepped on and broke the other one I gave her!). Instead of wasting time refreshing social media on my phone over and over, I am trying to use my 3DS more often instead. I also finally started Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies recently, which is a great quick start-and-stop game since you can save whenever you want. I love the Ace Attorney franchise and remembered I haven't played the two most recent games! The 3D effects in it and Ocarina of Time are great. I am still wowed by it and vastly prefer it to playing in 2D.

Some other stuff I feel like mentioning:

Made banana chips with old bananas
Released Part 12 of my Half-Life 2 playthrough
Played Apex Legends with Heather
Started my Udemy Photoshop course
Did all my Streaks!
Heather's garden compost bin came in. She seemed pretty excited about it, and it seems cool and sturdy!
We gave Lemons the Hamster some dried yellow squash. They seemed to really be into it. They had to climb a little to get to it and it was super cute.
I watched Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 10 Episode 9 while eating delicious Kraft Macaroni & Cheese. The key is to pour an excessive amount of salt into the water before it boils.
Worked on an Onward VR video for a little bit.

What a cutie.

What a cutie.

I started playing ChilledCow's "lofi hip hop radio - beats to relax/study to" while writing this post and immediately had flashes of Front Mission 3 in my head, making me want to play it. I don't know why. Perhaps the music sounded like something in the game, though I played it far too long ago to remember.

The Art of Video Games: StreetPassin'

This is the last video we shot at the exhibit on September 2nd, 2012. After checking out the guestbook for the second time, I was reminded that I had my 3DS in my pocket the entire time. I soon discovered that several other people had the same idea...

Oddly enough, the last time I StreetPass'd was back in December 2011 at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History.

StreetPass 3: Smithsonian Edition

Last month, on our way to visit our mom in Kansas for Christmas, my brother and I spent a few days visiting Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia, and Gettysburg. Having not had a StreetPass encounter since the ones with the Whiskey Media staff in June of 2011, I was eager for more. Luckily for me, at least three other people had the same idea on December 17th at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History. My Mii got to meet Max from Virginia, sarah from Virginia (I'm thinking they're from the same family since both of their Most Recent Software titles were nintendogs + cats), and nick from Coahuila de Zaragoza, Mexico. Max and sarah helped me finish my Pikmin and Metroid: Other M puzzles, respectively. I took more steps that day than ever before with a total of 7,545.

The Miis I met, along with some of the new features Nintendo added recently.

The next morning, on the 18th, I was excited for more SteetPass opportunities. If I got three in just one museum, how many would I get today? Though I crushed my previous record of 7,545 steps with a new, and current, record of 17,396, I got nothing. At first I was sad, but then annoyed because I realized the wireless functionality of my 3DS has been turned off somehow. I wondered how many encounters I missed as I turned StreetPass back on.

Ahhhhh, my legs!

Ahhhhh, my legs!

I encountered another person, Aggan, on the 22nd while in Kansas, but only via Super Street Fighter IV. Much like my fights with Jeff and Matt, I got my ass kicked.

Fast-forward almost two weeks later and we pass by someone on a road near our home, will rhein from North Carolina, who happened to have their 3DS on as well. On the 13th, at the Genghis Khan exhibit in Raleigh, North Carolina, I encountered Fupo, also from North Carolina. Supposedly it was their birthday!

StreetPass 2: Giant Bomb Staff Edition

I haven't had a lot of luck with StreetPass encounters. Shortly after the aforementioned post, I met two other Miis in the form of Gamessa and Clif, making for a total of three people I've come across since the launch of the 3DS in March. My experience with this feature has been disappointing, especially since receiving duplicate puzzle pieces in Puzzle Swap is common when purchased with Play Coins, as opposed to being guaranteed a new piece when encountering a fellow player. Having never been to a convention where it's common for people to pack their 3DS, I was excited to see what would happen when I visited the Whiskey Media office on June 24th. Arriving back at my hotel later that night, I had completely forgotten that my 3DS was still on and in my pocket. I excitedly took it out and booted up StreetPass Mii Plaza to be greeted with this:

Can you guess who?

As you can see from the second pic, I totally had the inside scoop on Matt Kessler's first review.

I then loaded up Puzzle Swap to reap my rewards.

Though I've technically finished Find Mii, I still have a few more hats to collect. Here's what the guys look like when pissed off at ghosts.

Ryan is a badass.

I also had the StreetPass functionality for Super Street Fighter IV turned on, and was surprised when I saw that Jeff was one of my opponents since I didn't encounter his Mii.

They both kicked my ass, by the way.

They both kicked my ass, by the way.

And those are probably the last StreetPass encounters I'm going to have for a very long time.

Oh, and if there was still any doubt as to the identity of the man in the following photo (from this thread), I think Ryan's Mii is enough evidence to lay this mystery to rest:

Case closed.

StreetPass

My first StreetPass ever on the Nintendo 3DS.

I'm in the backseat of my brother's car, sandwiched between two cat carriers on our way to Fayetteville, North Carolina, and the main thought going through my head at the moment is, "Will I have any StreetPass encounters?"

Since I've had my 3DS (March 28th, 2011), I've traveled from Oklahoma to Texas, Texas to Oklahoma, Oklahoma to Texas (again), Texas to Arkansas, Arkansas to Tennessee, and now, currently, Tennessee to North Carolina. So how many StreetPass encounters have I had? One. One measly encounter at some convenience store in Texas during the first trip mentioned above. Their name was "Bunny", to be exact. And wow, how exciting that encounter was when the little movie for our introductions played. Thanks to Bunny, I was able to obtain an extra puzzle piece for Puzzle Swap without having to spend my precious Play Coins. I was able to vanquish another ghost on my way to save the king in Find Mii.

The rarity in which I meet other 3DS users in sleep mode isn't for lack of trying, either. My 3DS is on and in my pocket everywhere I go. It's now on the same list as my wallet, keys, and phone under "Things to Take" whenever I leave the house. Hell, I even explored the confines of a three-story hospital when I took my brother to the emergency room (he's fine) in hopes to meet someone. Here are the messages I posted to Twitter during my little adventure:

A collection of Twitter posts from when I was trying to StreetPass in a hospital.

Pathetic? Maybe. But my effort will eventually be rewarded, and when it is, it will be glorious...

Man, I really just need to go to PAX or something.
